Cheap, quick and convenient, fast food is a worldwide favorite that we’re all guilty of loving. In fact, 95% of people have indulged in the likes of quick burgers, fries, shakes and chicken nuggets over the past 12 months.

Fast food restaurants are great when you need a quick bite to eat that won’t break the bank, but unfortunately, at some places, you get what you pay for. Leading to the basis of many fast food complaints - low cost translating to low care - in the quality of food to the staff serving you.

And while 2 in 3 people visit a fast-food restaurant weekly, they may struggle to find their familiar favourite, as consistency among chains is an urban myth. With the overall rating of individual franchises depending entirely on its location and employees.

Believe it or not, how friendly your server is has a big impact on the taste of your burger, with quality of service being the strongest predictor of customer satisfaction and a big decider of good reviews.

But where in the world can you find good customer service at fast food restaurants, that will guarantee you some good grub?

To find out, online casino Spin Casino has crunched the number, looking at restaurants of five of the most popular fast food chains in the world - McDonalds, Burger King, KFC, Subway and Starbucks. It has analysed five chains in the capital cities in the largest countries in the world, to understand customer ratings while taking into consideration quality of service and general visitor experience.

Top 20 countries for good fast food service

Famed for its smiling culture, Indonesia came in first place as the country with the friendliest fast food workers in the world. Indonesia’s capital city of Jakarta had the highest customer satisfaction rating overall, of 4.48 out of 5 on Google Reviews.

Following close behind is Dar es Salaam, in Tanzania. Home to 2024’s 2nd happiest fast food workers, all of Tanzania’s restaurants received a rating of 4.3 out of 5 or higher, averaging at 4.4 overall. Although it’s not number one, we still think it might be time to bring in the summer with a trip to see what a true ‘happy’ meal looks like.

Home to more than double the amount of fast food restaurants than traditional eateries, Algeria comes in third place, with all of its restaurants in Algiers receiving a rating of 3.8 out of 5 or higher. Clearly, the obsession with fast food in Algeria is met with equal enthusiasm by its workers, translating to a great on-the-go dining experience.

In fourth place, Karachi in Pakistan received a rating of 4.1 out of 5 or higher for all restaurants analysed.

With local and cultural etiquette highly regarded in Pakistan, workers are demonstrating how good customer service translates to great customer experience.

With Guatemala culture known for valuing relationships and work ethic, it’s no surprise that its capital rounds up the top five for friendly fast food workers; with all its restaurants receiving a rating of 4.3 out of 5 or higher.

Kenya comes in sixth place, with all restaurants in its capital of Nairobi receiving a rating of 4.2 out of 5 or higher.

Colombia, The Dominican Republic, Egypt and India round up the top ten with their succeeding overall ratings.

Despite America’s renowned love for fast food, with the very first fast food chain being established 103 years ago, the USA’s capital Washington D.C came in 68th place with a 3.63 out of 5 rating. However, dropping even lower than this with a 3.58 rating and in 71st place was London, United Kingdom.

Some of the larger countries, such as Mexico and Australia also came lower on the list for staff friendliness, which could be due to their high volume of fast food chains, requiring more staff to deal with a large number of demanding customers, reducing their ability to be attentive or personable.

Methodology

Spin Casino took a list of 84 capital cities in some of the largest countries around the world and compared the below data points:

• The average Google Reviews rating of five McDonalds restaurants in the city.
• The average Google Reviews rating of five Burger King restaurants in the city.
• The average Google Reviews rating of five KFC restaurants in the city.
• The average Google Reviews rating of five Subway restaurants in the city.
• The average Google Reviews rating of five Starbucks restaurants in the city.

Each rating was then given a total average for the city. Where a chain of restaurants were not present in the city, an average rating was created based on the existing fast food chains in the country. Data correct as of February 2024.
